BOOK A CALL BACK REQUEST A FREE CONSULTATIONTo the uninitiated VAT may appear a complex tax system that involves a lot of administration and often it can be. dns accountants offer a cost effective VAT registration and returns service to assist businesses with making the right decision as to whether to register for VAT; completing the VAT registration process, and then filing accurate VAT returns on time. Before you make any VAT decisions, it’s best to talk to a dns accountants tax advisor about the advantages and disadvantages of becoming VAT registered.
Deciding whether to register for VAT can be a key decision particularly for business start-ups. Businesses can register voluntarily, but whether it is advantageous to register is a crucial management decision. Businesses must register within 30 days if turnover exceeds £90,000 in the previous 12 months, similarly if turnover is expected to exceed £90,000 in the following 30 days, the business must notify HMRC within 30 days of the date the threshold is expected to be exceeded.
It may be advantageous to register for VAT voluntarily to take advantage of things such as repayments of VAT because when you’re registered you can charge VAT on business taxable supplies and goods (output tax) and you can reclaim VAT on your business purchases (input tax). If more input tax has been paid than output tax, HMRC will refund the difference. This can be useful at the start of a business when most business purchases are made.
Being VAT registered may also offer your business more credibility, and if your supplies are zero rated, you can still reclaim VAT on the business purchases, resulting in a refund from HMRC.
BUT this must be weighed up against the increased workload because once VAT is registered, your business must account for output tax on all taxable supplies, keep proper VAT records and accounts, and send in VAT returns when requested to do so by HMRC.
Here at dns accountants we can help you come to a decision about whether to register or not. Then we’ll manage the whole VAT registration for you. Since 1 April 2022, VAT-registered businesses need to comply with the requirements laid out by Making Tax Digital (MTD), which comprises using compatible software to keep proper records and file returns. However, irrespective of such requirements, it is possible for business owners to file VAT returns via their VAT online account. You can submit VAT return electronically via Making Tax Digital (MTD).
You can find your VAT number on the registration certificate issued by HMRC upon your business’ successful VAT registration. Upon receiving your VAT registration certificate, your agent or you can yourself create a VAT account online.
It’s a form that business owners fill in to inform HMRC about the amount of VAT they have been charged with and the amount business owners paid to businesses. Every 3 months, business owners need to send a VAT Return to HMRC.
Although you can do your own VAT return, it is advisable to opt for reliable VAT return services from any agency, so that the experts make your process a hassle-free one. dns accountants offers one of the best VAT return services in the market.
You should make your payment to HMRC bank account within the prescribed deadline. If you want to understand how much time you need to allow for this, you can make use of VAT payment deadline calculator. For faster payments, you can opt for online or telephone banking or process it via your online bank account. Another good option at your disposal would be CHAPS. It will take 3 working days for the payment to be processed via Direct Debit, Bacs, Standing order, Online by debit or corporate credit card, or at your bank or building society.
Your payment should be transferred to HMRC’s bank account on the last working day if the deadline falls on a bank holiday or a weekend. But that’s not the case if you pay via Faster Payments. There will be a deadline mentioned on your VAT return, which you need to follow to pay your VAT bill. If you fail to pay VAT on time, you may incur an extra charge.
Even small businesses can undergo VAT registration process, either through the online service or via any agency or agent. However, this is possible only if the business turnover is less than £90,000. This falls under voluntary registration. You must pay HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on any VAT you owe from the date they register you. If everything you sell is exempted from VAT, you do not have to register for VAT.
